The Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue and the Supplement that Saved Me from Adrenal Burnout

In our fast-paced world with little to no rest, most of us are dealing with some form of adrenal fatigue or another. In today’s video, I talk about the symptoms I experienced and how I treated myself naturally. There are said to be four stages of adrenal fatigue and although the main stressors which caused my adrenal fatigue in the first place were now gone, I found myself stuck in stage 4 burnout. Thankfully, one supplement changed my life and turned everything around!

Can you relate? If so, here is a breakdown of the four stages of adrenal fatigue:


Sample Situation: Going for a job interview.

Behind the Scenes: This is the initial stress response to common life stressors. Adrenaline and other common stress hormones have kicked in, you may feel energized and more alert but your sleep can begin to deteriorate which can then lead to low energy throughout the day.


Sample Situation: Above-average daily stress at work or home.

Behind the Scenes: In this stage, your endocrine system is producing the hormones necessary to cope but your body will begin to prioritize which hormones it produces first. This can mean that DHEA and other sex hormones may start to diminish. You can get through the day (on enough coffee!) but then crash hard in the evening.


Sample Situation: Going through a divorce.

Behind the Scenes: Your endocrine system continues to prioritize stress hormones (like cortisol) at the expense of sex hormones. You can function fairly well but feel regular fatigue, low immunity, lower sex drive, and a general laissez-faire attitude about life. Sugar, refined carbs, caffeine and alcohol will become your medication. The bigger problem is this: many of those sex hormones are precursors to cortisol. You know what’s coming next…


Sample Situation: Finally reaching the last chemo round for your sick child’s cancer treatment.

Behind the Scenes: Eventually, the body just can’t “fake it ’till you make it” any longer. It runs out of ways to create stress hormones and cortisol levels will begin to plummet. In this final stage, everything is busted and people experience extreme fatigue, irritability, panic attacks/anxiety, depression, complete lack of sex drive and a total disinterest in the world. You are on total survival mode.

NOTE: I find that this stage seems to kick in when things have finally improved or the chronic stress has ended (i.e. you quit your crappy job, you finish school, you heal your relationship, etc). It’s as if your body finally gets to relax but it has been operating at full-speed for so long, it no longer remembers where the baseline is — and so it crashes hard.

Lab tests can confirm which stage of adrenal fatigue you may be experiencing. Most holistic practitioners will administer a salivary cortisol test, which gauges your cortisol levels at four different times of the day (waking, mid-morning, mid-afternoon, before bed) and paints a great picture of which stage you may be in.
